If you haven’t spoken on camera much before…. I’m thinking you might be hearing your pulse in your ears almost louder than you hear your own voice?
That you’re a bit short on breath?
Your stomach feels like it’s churning or flipping…
You might even be a bit sweaty palmed and shakey?!
THIS IS NORMAL.
In this episode of The Emily Osmond Show, learn where to start and my top tips for getting yourself on camera!
It’s like the public speaking thing. 99% of us DREAD IT before we do it. And still dread it the next time and the next…
Until we KEEP ON DOING IT and we realise… “hmm I actually don’t mind this so much now”…
“You know what I do feel more comfortable and a big more natural”…
And “I hate to admit this but I actually don’t mind this… I kind of even ENJOY IT.”
But you’re not going to suddenly wake up one day and think “yay I’m going to do videos today – this doesn’t scare me at all” WITHOUT DOING THE WORK.
You have to move through the awkward, uncomfortable, scary feelings and stage of videos to come out the other side. There really is no other way.
So why do it?
If your audience can’t see you, they can’t connect with you.
Think about the content on Instagram that you spend the most time consuming… is it a picture or is it someone’s video… and if it’s a video, what’s in the video? Is it someone? I’m guessing yes!
And are they perfect and is it a professional filmed video? I’m guessing no.
Is it real and you love to see it being raw? I’m guessing yes.
As a business owner, your biggest and most untapped marketing advantage is YOU. No-one can replicate YOU. No-one can out-price YOU. No-one can offer YOU.
Start showing up as YOU. And you don’t have to go straight to doing Instagram Lives or IGTV.
Start where you are right now and progress, just like I teach my students.
The video progression ladder:
1.) Share your first ever Instagram Story
2.) Share your first Instagram Story of you talking in it! (TIP – The “subtle” filter does wonders if you’re feels a bit blah!).
3.) If you’ve only shared one Instagram Story of you talking, this week share TWO!
4.) If you share weekly Stories of you talking already, do your first Instagram LIVE!!
5.) If you’ve only shared one Instagram LIVE, this week go live TWICE!
6.) If you are going Live on Instagram weekly, create your IGTV Channel and share your first video to it! TIP: Share the “Preview” to your Instagram feed to supercharge the number of views and you can upload a cover image if you want to make it fit into your feed’s aesthetic better.
7.) If you’ve already shared an IGTV, this week share TWO!
I also want to share a few tips when filming speaking to camera that will help you when it comes time to hit “record”!
1.) Bring the excitement for your audience by SMILING and at least trying to look like you’re happy to be there 😉 Do a few star jumps if you need to, to amp yourself up 😉
2.) Look at the camera lens NOT the screen – you want to make eye contact with your audience
3.) Create the video for sound off – i.e. when the video allows (Instagram Stories) write a little summary on the screen of the key points of your video
4.) FACE THE LIGHT! Face a window for natural light. It helps to get rid of shadows!
5.) BONUS TIP: Just post your imperfect video where you “stuff up” rather than filming over and over, because people LOVE to raw and real rather than perfectly curated (boring!).
