Do you ever find yourself filling your time with tasks and projects because they feel fun, productive, and a bit like a sugar hit… only to realise that they are taking your time and focus away from the activities that actually grow your income?
When we are running our own business, there are so many things that we could be doing. There are lots of shiny objects that keep attracting us towards them.
I want you to think about these different things as sugar hits: they feel great at the time.
This could be be tweaking your website because that’s kind of fun, or starting a Pinterest account and starting pinning. It could be writing out some blog posts…
They are easy. They feel good. And the dangerous thing is that we feel as though we are being productive. BUT – these shiny objects are not doing anything for your business, unless you are specifically tracking these, measuring these and you know that they are bringing you customers or clients.
Maybe right now are trying to reach $500 a month, or $2000 a month, or $10,000, $50,000, $100,000, $250,000 a month or more.
Let’s pretend right now you want to reach $10,000 a month.
I want you to ask yourself every time you are doing something in your business: is this a $10k activity?
Or if you are on your way to a million, ask yourself: “is this a million dollar activity?:
I’ve just had this beautiful new website designed (by Emma Troy) and my goal is to not log into the back end of my website because that is not a million dollar activity. It is smarter for me to pay someone else (who will be much quicker and skilled than me!) to tweak my website, even though I could do it myself.
Now the reason that we can get busy doing these things is because we also have a little bit of fear around doing the things that are actually hard.
It is confronting to look at our business and what isn’t working. And it feels hard because it is harder than tweaking our website, or designing nice graphics for our social media, or starting a Pinterest account.
That’s the “fun” stuff.
The hard stuff in our business is what’s going to help us grow. It takes brain power!
And it can feel scary because we could fail at it. It’s new to us. We haven’t done it before. We could get rejected…
But these are the things I really want you to focus on looking at.
What are those things in my business that are actually going to move the needle?
This is why in The Modern Marketing Collective, one of the first things we do is audit what you are doing in your business so that you can strip out all of those things that might feel productive and free up your time for the income building activities.
When I reached my first hundred thousand dollars in my business, I wasn’t pinning on Pinterest. I didn’t have a podcast. I wasn’t doing a whole lot of different things. I was just laser focused on those few things I knew were getting me clients. And so that’s what I want you to do as well. Then once you reach that income goal, by all means, add in all those extra things, if you want to. But the thing is, you will probably realise you don’t even need them to succeed.
So once things start feeling a little bit hard or it feels a little scary or confronting, I want you to first of all, question, what are you then going to do about that?
Are you going to go back to the sugar hit and comfort zone?
What if instead you pushed through when it feels a little bit hard., uncomfortable or confronting?
When you are worried about failing or getting rejected – what if you just keep pushing through?
Successful business owners do the hard stuff, not the easy stuff.
