Should you pause marketing during uncertain times?
You might be wondering: is there any point in marketing right now?
And you could be telling yourself: “no one is going to be buying”.
Or even – “I feel bad marketing when I know people are struggling”.
I hear you. When Covid-19 started impacting life here in Australia, with restrictions put in place and businesses closing their doors, I too was wary and worried that sales in mine and my friends’ business might stop.
Yet if I looked at my own behaviour, I, albeit more cautiously, was still spending money on services and products for my business and life.
And it soon became clear that other people were doing the same.
I was messaging one of my students inside my online coaching group The Modern Marketing Collective and she told me:
“I’m so glad I haven’t stopped marketing. I’ve been making a few sales over the last few weeks. It really is important to keep going isn’t it. So many friends with small businesses have just stopped posting.”
This student went on to double her best month of revenue in her business.
This would not have happened if she stopped marketing herself.
We need to be careful that we aren’t making our beliefs reality through our actions.
Because of course no one is going to buy from you if you stop telling them how!
And I say this with sensitivity knowing some industries and small businesses are in dire situations and I know we all wish that wasn’t the case.
So if you have something that people can buy now, who are you to stop marketing and letting your audience know about your services or products that you’ve created specifically to serve and delight them?
Don’t make the decision for your customers if they will buy or not.
There will always be people who can’t afford what you have to offer.
In fact, I was speaking with one of my friends just the other day about introducing a higher level offering with a higher price point and knowing that some of our community probably won’t be able to afford the price and feeling somewhat uncomfortable or bad about this.
But again, that is our belief and not necessarily the truth. And heard this described also as being quite insulting to your customers to assume what they can and can’t afford.
I always encourage my students to add in a higher level offer. It’s not meant to be for everyone – it’s just for the few.
And I love hearing them report back when they make that sale for the first time at their new higher price point.
So friend, don’t take away your customer’s agency to choose.
Offer your amazing products and services and let them decide… you might just be surprised!
