Sometimes, the only thing holding us back is the way we talk to ourselves. If we keep up this negative self-talk, growth is going to be very hard. So take a look at five pervasive mistruths we often tell ourselves – and what we could be thinking instead.
1. They Won’t Like Me/This.
Tough talk here: Who are you building your business for? You’re not doing it to please others and keep others happy (because you won’t be able to whatever you do!). You’re building your business for YOU. Focus on what you’re here to do. Because no matter what you do, other people will always have something to say.
2. I’m Not Good Enough
Admission: this is a big one for me too. But we can either tell ourselves this and wallow (not helpful I realised) – or we can recognise and accept the truth that we have experiences that are unique to us, we have a level of knowledge that is valuable to the people we want to help, and we have our own approach and personality to share that is completely unlike anyone else.
So don’t compare, don’t tell yourself you’re not enough: realise how much you have to give…. and then start GIVING.
3. No One Cares What I Have to Say
First of all – this is simply NOT true. It’s just a matter of figuring out what to share for your community. Test. Try different things and see what they love. Share what YOU love. Because when you start sharing openly with others – the know, like and trust factor (the No. 1 Goal of Marketing!) skyrockets, along with the number of meaningful relationships.
4. I’m not ready
I totally get that sometimes it’s simply not the right time. But how often do you use this as an excuse when the reality is you’re actually a little scared?! It’s self sabotage and playing it safe 101. You think you need to have, or be, or do X first. But no one going to come and tell you you’re ready. It’s up to you to give yourself permission.
5. I should
Remove “should” from your vocabulary. Trust me – I highly recommend it! It’s either: “I am”, “I will” or “it’s not a priority right now”. Look at the things you think you “should” be doing. Do you really want to do them? Or do you feel like you have to because someone else said so?! If they actually really matter to you – get on and prioritise them. If not, let them go. And above all – be kind to yourself: you can’t do everything at once, so prioritise and let go.
And remember: connection over perfection – you have got this.
