I’ve had a few different conversations around competitors and copycats recently and it got me thinking about how my own approach to these business challenges has changed over time. So if you are feeling paralysed by the competitors in your market or fearful or others copying you, let me share three key truths to help you move past these challenges, fast.
1. The quickest way to slow down is trying to do what others are doing.
You are here and you want to get to your dream business city.
Looking at what everyone else is doing and trying to piece it together means you’re taking a bus here than getting off and waiting for another bus there, when instead you could get on the train and get to where you want to be fast without changing vehicles
I remember when running my service based business and there was one particular other business. They launched a new website and several of my friends sent it to me and said it was so similar to mine. Same with their social media aesthetic.
To me, I didn’t let myself waste time even delving into it. A quick look – same colours (but I don’t own pastels) but I wasn’t worried because…
2. Your energy will attract the right people for you.
I have people joining my program who are Instagram teachers and creating online programs. First, go back to point #2 – they will be catching different buses if they are trying to copy while I’m on my direct train.
But also we all attract different people through our unique personality and energy.
There are billions of people in the world.
I don’t need all of them!
When you share more of you, your marketing becomes a magnet – some will be attracted and some will be repelled. That’s great. Otherwise you’re there with no pull or push happening at all.
So I know that others who offer similar things to me will attract and repel different people too. We have different personalities and energies and the worst thing I can do is try and be like them or someone else – doesn’t work, isn’t genuine and isn’t sustainable.
It is liberating being you.
3. Holding back lets THEM win
Right now, you could be holding back sharing amazing content for your audience or even promoting what it is you offer because you are worried about copycats.
Legalities aside – because if your IP is jeopardised speak with a lawyer.
But if you see people copy your content – maybe similar topics being shared…
You don’t own those topics
You don’t own videos
You don’t own carousel posts
If you hold back you are letting the copycats win – stifling your own business and not attracting or repelling.
Unfollow or mute them or remember looking at them will only slow you down.
Get on your own train to your business success city. Lean in to doing it your way.
So I want you to think – what will you change going forward now?
